November 2021 Meeting and Program

Fall has arrived and the holidays are just around the corner. It’s a busy time of year, even during a global pandemic! Need some help juggling your writing with your promotion efforts? How about with formatting your books to indie publish? Or maybe you need a polish editing before you submit your masterpiece to your agent or publisher.  There are many tasks authors could use some help with. But where do you turn?

Our next meeting and program will be on Saturday, November 13, at noon CST. After a brief business meeting, Teresa Russ, owner of Poised Pen Productions, will educate us all on what exactly a virtual assistant does and how to work with one most effectively.  Our meetings are now held once more at the Decatur Public Library, Decatur, AL, in the upstairs Community Room (an elevator is nearby) but also via Zoom. We hope to see you there!

September 2021 Meeting Information

We’re very pleased to announce that we can meet in-person again! Our next meeting is Saturday, September 11, 2021, in the Decatur Public Library, upstairs in the Community Room. You may bring a drink in a spill-proof container but no food, please. We suggest all members and guests wear a mask while entering and exiting the building as well, for everyone’s protection.

Our business meeting will start at noon, followed by two short craft discussions, and then we’ll talk more and work more on our short stories for our upcoming anthology. More to come on that, as details emerge!

May 2021 Meeting and Program Info

Our May meeting will be the second Saturday at noon CDT at one member’s home as well as via Zoom. If you’re interested in attending and are not a member yet, please contact us and we’ll help you get connected. We hope to see you there!

After a brief business meeting, Paula Gail Benson will present a program on Writing and Using Short Stories to Promote Your Other Works.

If you are interested in trying short story writing or just hope to better appreciate shorter works, this presentation will help you consider the possibilities.

About Paula:

A legislative attorney and former law librarian, Paula Gail Benson’s short stories have appeared in the online magazines Bethlehem Writers Roundtable and Kings River Life as well as the anthologies Mystery Times Ten 2013; A Tall Ship, a Star, and Plunder; A Shaker of Margaritas: That Mysterious Woman; Fish or Cut Bait: a Guppy Anthology; Love in the Lowcountry; and Heartbreaks and Half-truths. She regularly blogs with others about writing mysteries at the Stiletto Gang and Writers Who Kill. Her short story, “A Matter of Honor,” co-authored with New York Times Bestselling thriller writer Robert Dugoni, is in Killer Nashville Noir: Cold Blooded. Her next short story “Reputation or Soul” will appear in Malice Domestic’s Mystery Most Diabolical anthology, to be released later this year. February 2021 Meeting and Program

Our February meeting will again be held via Zoom on Saturday, February 13, and will include a brief business meeting, The program will be a discussion about various writing approaches, led by two published author members.

November 2020 Meeting and Program Information

Happy Fall! Our next meeting will be via Zoom again and for the foreseeable future. Note that we will not have a regular meeting in December, but will be having a virtual “pitch-in lunch” and Secret Santa exchange instead.

If you’re interested in joining HODFW, you can do so by clicking Join and completing the membership application. We’d be happy to welcome virtual visitors as well; you can attend 2 meetings before joining. Just contact us and we’ll work out the details.

There will be a short business meeting on November 14  starting at noon CST. The program following will be a video recording of a local Alabama herbalist taking a walk through the woods to identify wild plants and their medicinal uses. It’s interesting information as well as useful to know for creating characters and situations in fictional stories. See you soon!

September 2020 Program – Overview of the Book Publicity Process

Welcome to autumn! Or soon, anyway… We are now happy to welcome new members to HODFW! Simply fill out the membership application under the Join tab and submit your payment to join our group. We look forward to getting to know you!

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, September 12, starting at 12:00 pm CDT via Zoom. The meeting invite will be sent out to all members of HODFW via email. Our speaker will be Wiley Saichek of Saichek Publicity, talking about book publicity in these pandemic times.  We hope to see you there!
